Zhang Xiufang: The Needlework Artisan Keeping Embroidery Traditions Alive

Since ancient times, rural women in Qingyang have maintained the fine tradition of crafting embroidered sachets. Zhang Xiufang stands as an exemplary representative of these needlework artisans. Now 53 years old, Zhang has been making sachets for four decades. Her grandmother and mother were locally renowned embroiderers, and through childhood immersion, Zhang mastered sachet-making by age eleven or twelve.

Through years of dedicated practice, Zhang’s sachet embroidery skills reached remarkable proficiency. In June 2002, at the inaugural Qingyang Dragon Boat Festival Sachet Folk Culture Festival, her craftsmanship gradually gained market recognition. She has since earned these honors:

  • Qingyang Intangible Cultural Heritage Bearer of Sachet Embroidery
  • Qingyang Folk Arts and Crafts Master
  • Gansu Province Sachet Embroidery Art Master
  • Gansu Province Folk Artist

While building a prosperous sachet business, Zhang has also empowered over 100 women in Xifeng district through year-round sachet production, creating shared economic success.
